I LOVE these old Jap bikes! They were what I used to ride. My first was a '65 Yamaha YDS3 (250cc 2stroke twin), then I had a '72 CB450, then a '80 CB650C. They still make these "standard" style bikes in Japan, but not here, although I think it's only a matter of time before they make their return. One of the reasons I liked the V-Strom was it had a riding position close to these old standard bikes.

Here's a pic from the streets of Tokyo when I was there in January. This is a bike shop near where I used to live there. The foot-pegs are still a bit aggressive, but it's getting there.

Oh, and the CB650 had a sissy bar just like your pic, and I did the exact same thing with my helmet back in college.

Thanks for the flashback

Now that's my era of bikes right there! Still, I don't know if you can find a more iconic bike from the late 70's than the KZ-1000. Every now and again I stumble across one in a parking lot, and my kids just Do Not Get why I stop and look every single time.

Oh, BTW, I picked up a Millermatic 135.

That's a nice welder, Bill. You will get a lot of satisfying use out of it.

So far I'm very impressed with the Miller. I've used Hobart migs, and this is head and shoulders above them (at twice the price, I suppose you'd expect that). It produces text-book beads, is really easy to start, and I like the gun design. So... now I'm looking for a spool-gun, the only bummer about the 135 is that it takes the 3035 spool-gun ($650) instead of the SP100 ($230). I'm not sure why one spool gun would be that much more than another, both are rated for the same current. I wonder how much trouble it would be to adapt a SP100 to run off the 3035 socket.

As a guess I would say the microprocessor is the difference.

I dunno JAC, I talked to the Miller guy today. The controller for the 3035 spool gun is a seperate piece, costs an extra $300 bringing the price of the spool gun setup to about $900 - more than a new Millermatic 140! However, he did say that if I got the controller it should work with the SP100 spool gun, so the total price would be around $500. Still pretty dang salty.

Hey, quit changing the topic!

I almost bought a KZ-650 when I was shopping for the CB650, but the Honda was cleaner, had been better taken care of, and had fewer miles on it. The KZ-650 and the CB550-four (and I suppose the CB750 to) from the 70's were what had me going. They still do. I never really went for even the "Nighthawks" which led to the whole sport-bike look. This Japan-only Suzuki Impule (I believe it's a 400-four) has the same kind of beauty.

OK, I'm going to throw this one out there as well. Today was another one of those rare, sunny, warm days here in rainland, so I ventured east instead of west.

Oceans and mountains and trees, oh my...

I started on a CB450 (or was it CB350?). Thing steered like a dead pig compared to my first Honda Rebel. I scraped pegs on the Rebel without even trying. But I got a lot of fun out of that Honda. Good times.

Can't wait to get a real touring bike, though. It occured to me recently that I might still have a credit line with Kawasaki. Cannot recall if I closed it or not. Might have to go get something if it's still open. I'm a very stupid man, after all.

Credit's the only way to go... everybody knows that. You'd be helping out the nation in our credit-deflationary crisis. We need more people like you to go out there and blow some dough on your credit!!

As soon as our kids get older, I'll look to get a bike. I'll have to apply for credit with BMW. Or just charge it to my 4th on my house...

I went to the Miller dealer, the 3035 is 60% duty cycle at 150 amps, the SP100 is 35% duty cycle at 135 amps. So the SP100 would really be a better match for my welder, even though the 3035 is a "better" gun. And there is the matter of a converter box for the spool gun. The 135 needs an external control box, which is about $300. The Miller guy thinks that the controller box will handle either the SP100 or the 3035, but he didn't have either spool gun in stock.

Makes me proud to do my patriotic duty!

j/k. I'm not crazy enough to get another bike right now. (sadly...)

My only regret with that line of credit is that I didn't use it to get the 2006 Concours that caught my eye when I bought my Ninja.

Does it count if the loan carries a 0% interest rate, like my new truck?

Which mountain's that?

Nothing better than waiting near 2 years to make a lump sum payment and have that next statement showing all the deferred interest...
